journey
It started with a small room in a home backyard with my grandfather’s table and a very few tools. The joy of making was so healing that it continued to grow.
The sheet metal completely moulded the classical realistic sculptural training and the transitions in the material inspired the pieces further. The abstraction It offered turned more into their essence than its appearance and rest followed. It resonated with my personal artistic process by itself with time.
material & PROCESS
The material and technique makes the form evolve in its own unique way. Our very first collection, BIOPHONY was born out of the joy of working with metal sheet and that gave the forms its own course of abstraction. The pieces carry the hints of creatures we hardly pay attention to in our day-to-day life becomes reminiscent of our tiny existence as humans in co existence with other species.
We love learning and incorporating new techniques in our process of making the pieces so they keep evolving.
The materials we use to make the pieces are brass, copper and sterling silver as of now . We also experiment with techniques to fuse two or more metals together such as ‘SHIBUICHI’ and ‘MOKUME GANE’ in some exclusive pieces.
SURFACE TREATMENTS AND PATINA
At Dookdi, the act of making is close to a prayer – decay and disintegration , considered as an integral part of creation.
Some of our pieces are treated with PATINATION. It is an extremely interesting process. In which, metal in-between disintegrating , forms a beautiful layer on the surface in order to protect itself.
Unlike applied painting and powder coatings, the effect is caused by the reaction of the metal surface. Some metals react with moist air on their own skin at a gradual pace we call , ‘beautifully ageing’! Metals like brass ,copper, bronze and even silver ages beautifully. We embrace this natural process and try to incorporate the same.
